FSG hold talks with Swansea boss

Sky Sports sources understand Brendan Rodgers has told Swansea he wants to become Liverpool manager after meeting with their owners. However, the Swans boss has reportedly told his current club he has not been offered the job yet - despite claims he has already agreed a three-year deal. Rodgers initially rejected the chance to speak with the Anfield club over succeeding Kenny Dalglish but appears to have had a change of heart. After talks with Liverpool's owners, the manager met with Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins on Wednesday and told him he wants to leave the Liberty Stadium for Merseyside. Rodgers has always been one of Liverpool's top targets to replace Dalglish, who was sacked on 16th May after a dismal Premier League season. And Liverpool's American owners, Fenway Sports Group, have made a second formal approach for 39-year-old Rodgers as part of a widespread recruitment process.

Prime candidate

Rodgers' achievements with Swansea in their debut Premier League campaign, where he has built a young squad who play attractive football, have always made him a prime candidate. Wigan boss Roberto Martinez had at one point appeared a frontrunner for the role but Latics chairman Dave Whelan claimed on Wednesday he will be staying at the DW Stadium. Liverpool had reportedly approached the likes of Borussia Dortmund's Jurgen Klopp, former England boss Fabio Capello and ex-Chelsea coach Andre Villas-Boas in their search. But a Brit has always been considered as FSG's ideal, while Martinez is not understood to have ever been offered the job, despite Whelan's claims. Another factor which is reported to have convinced Rodgers to take up the challenge at Liverpool is a decrease in interest in appointing Louis van Gaal as a director of football, which could have diminished the power of any young, new manager. Rodgers' Swansea inflicted the final defeat on Dalglish's second reign as Liverpool manager in a 1-0 result at the Liberty Stadium on the final day of the Premier League season.
