Swansea boss Kenny Jackett has been hit with the news that influential captain Garry Monk has been ruled for at least three months.
The 27-year-old central defender has suffered a serious knee injury and will now be sidelined for the foreseeable future after damaging a lateral ligament in what was an innocuous-looking challenge with Scunthorpe's Andy Keogh.
An initial diagnosis predicted Monk would be ruled out for six weeks but an MRI scan has now confirmed the club's worst fears.
Jackett admits the injury has come at a nightmare time being so early in the season but he is, nevertheless, remaining philosophical about his ill-fortune.
''It's a big disappointment for Garry because this is a big season for him,'' confirmed Jackett.
''Unfortunately these things happen in football.''
