Johnson rejects Gibraltar chance

Oldham boss Lee Johnson has revealed he turned down the chance to come out of retirement to play international football for Gibraltar.

The 33-year-old former midfielder, who is the Football League's youngest manager, has not played a competitive game since he took over at Latics in March 2013. However, a family relation meant he was approached about the possibility of representing Gibraltar in their first-ever European Championship qualifying campaign. The minnows lost their first game 7-0 against Poland and will face both Scotland and World Cup winners Germany in their group games. "It's a funny one because my nan - my dad's mum - is a full Gibraltarian," Johnson explained at his Thursday morning press conference. "I just got a phone call from an agent saying they are searching for players that could be eligible, would you be interested? "I was shocked. I rang the chairman and the chairman said 'you've got to do it, we're going to get all the players there'. I think they play Germany next! "It was nice to be thought of again in those terms but I don't really want to be running after the world champions when we've got a game on Saturday!"
