Former Leeds and QPR goalkeeper Paddy Kenny is poised to join Bolton Wanderers on a short-term contract.

The 36-year-old Republic of Ireland international is a free agent after leaving Leeds during the summer.

Kenny will provide cover for Andy Lonergan with Adam Bogdan facing two months on the sidelines because of a finger problem.

Bolton manager Dougie Freedman said: “Paddy Kenny is a very experienced player. We have had a difficult time last week with Adam Bogdan’s freakish injury so Paddy is going to come in on a short-term contract.

“He is looking forward to getting back into training day-in, day-out and he will be looking forward to playing some games, no doubt, knowing Paddy.

“I think Andy Lonergan has done ever so well and he has got the jersey to keep and Paddy is there to back him up and hopefully to make sure training is done right and the attitude is right between the goalkeepers.”

Meanwhile, Freedman believes his side need just one win to launch their season.

The Trotters are currently 22nd in the Sky Bet Championship table with only two points from six matches as they prepare to host Rotherham on Tuesday.

Freedman said: “I am frustrated, no doubt, but I am also realistic in terms of what we are trying to do and where we are right now.

“I understand what I have got to do off the field and also try to keep one eye on the field and I don’t think we are too far away at all.

“We are playing against some good teams - there’s not a lot in this division - and we just need that scrappy win and we will go on from there.

“There is not a lot in it. The games have been very close.”
