Oldham manager Ronnie Moore has set his sights on striker Gareth Taylor.
The 33-year-old was released by Nottingham Forest at the end of the season and had been expected to join Crewe, having recently enjoyed a successful loan spell at Gresty Road.
Crewe boss Dario Gradi has offered Taylor a new deal, but Moore has now given the veteran an alternative option.
Moore believes that the former Manchester City man could make a big impact at Oldham, and is hoping to bring him to Boundary Park.
"He is someone who leads the line well and knows where the goal is," he praised.
"He is the kind of striker we are looking for, so I have registered our interest."
One Crewe striker set to exit Gresty Road this summer is Spaniard Juan Ugarte.
The former Real Sociedad and Wrexham hit-man struggled to work his way into the first team this past season.
After returning home to Spain for injury treatment, Gradi has lost patience with the goalscorer and is now ready to release him.
