Lee Johnson revealed a telephone conversation with his father this weekend caused him to recall a youthful indiscretion.
Johnson Jnr comes face to face with dad Gary when his Oldham side host Yeovil on Tuesday night.
"We had a conversation over the weekend and it was very cagey - probably the most cagey since I ran away from home once when I was nine," he said.
"Of course it's difficult because we both want each other to do well. We were so pleased for each other with the results over the weekend but, at the same time, we couldn't really give away too much.
"So it was a bit of an awkward one but, certainly, once the game's over it will be back to normal."
That impromptu departure from the family home stemmed from a telling-off on the back of an ill-advised one-man kickabout in the living room, but the once-chastened son concedes mother Caron - who will watch the match from the Boundary Park directors' box - has not made her feelings clear on this occasion.
"She's certainly kept her cards close to her chest," he added. "I'd say that she would secretly be pleased if we won and I'm sure Dad will be saying the same thing."
