Cobblers boss wants to retain loan star

Northampton manager Stuart Gray is hoping to extend Alex Russell's stay with The Cobblers.

The Bristol City man is nearing the end of his month's stay at Sixfields, but Gray wants to retain his services longer after making a positive impact with the League Two outfit.

Gray is now hoping to speak to Robins boss Gary Johnson and Russell himself with a view to keeping the 34-year-old at the club beyond September.

"In terms of extending Alex's stay with us, it's probably the case that the better Bristol City do, the better it will be for us," Gray told the Northampton Chronicle and Echo.

"We would definitely like to extend his loan period and it's something I will be talking to Gary Johnson and the player himself in the very near future.

"He has been an excellent addition for us. He knows when to slow the pace of a game down and when to pick it up as well and he's got a very good habit of always passing to someone in a claret shirt."
