Opposing managers have been offering compliments to Jose Riga's Blackpool for weeks now, but he happily traded the kind words for three points last week.

The Seasiders ended a 160-day stint without a victory when they beat Cardiff in front of television cameras on Friday night at Bloomfield Road.

Despite the fact they came into that contest propping up the Sky Bet Championship, that result had been coming with Blackpool only having lost by more than one goal on two occasions under their Belgian boss.

"Most of the teams that we have competed with told us the same," said Riga, whose men finally won at the 11th time of asking this season.

"When you win it is more easy to make some compliment, but I think they also realised. They said they'd never seen a team that were bottom in any game. We were resisting every time.

"But after you forget the game and you see the ranking and you see Blackpool at the bottom.

"It's not easy to stay competitive and to perform when you see how much you have to give to get some points and still stay in the same place.

"We know some times you take only one point but when you have three points it makes the difference.

"It's only one step and, believe me, I still know what I need. I know that to survive and to be really competitive we need more."
