Sky Bet Championship: Blackpool manager Barry Ferguson wanted more loan recruits

Barry Ferguson admits he had been hoping to bring more loanees into Blackpool before the window slammed shut.

The Seasiders were able to land Greek striker Apostolos Vellios from Everton, but he is short on match sharpness after going 15 months without a competitive appearance and will need time in which to find his feet.

Ferguson is also believed to have been in for a new defender, with the Scot eager to ensure the back door remains bolted as Blackpool scrap for their Championship lives.

He was unable to get a deal over the line, despite his best efforts, but feels Vellios will prove to be a shrewd acquisition in time.

Ferguson said in the Blackpool Gazette: “He did alright (against Queens Park Rangers) but he’s not played a lot of football. It was a difficult ask to put him in on Saturday.

“He had only trained with the boys once, but I’m sure he’ll do well for us.

“We tried to get a couple of other players in but they didn’t happen, for one reason or another.

“As I said last week, it was through no fault of our own that they didn’t arrive. We did everything we possibly could.”

One loan star already at Bloomfield Road is Kevin Foley, and reports suggest that Ferguson will make a decision before Saturday’s crunch clash with fellow struggles Yeovil Town on whether or not to extend his stay from Wolverhampton Wanderers.
