Hornets swoop for duo

Watford have completed the signings of defender Tom Aldred and goalkeeper Rene Gilmartin.

Defender and goalkeeper sign on at Vicarage Road

Watford have completed the signings of defender Tom Aldred and goalkeeper Rene Gilmartin. Former Carlisle defender Aldred, 20, has signed a two-year contract with the Hornets, with the option of a third year, and arrives after his deal with the Cumbrians expired. The promising Scottish centre-half links up with compatriot Malky Mackay at Vicarage Road, after talks which were revealed by skysports.com. Aldred was a former youth team captain at Brunton Park and has been called up by the Scotland Under-19s in the past. He will link up immediately with the squad for pre-season training and the club have made a compensation offer to Carlisle for the player. Meanwhile, Watford have also snapped up Walsall keeper Gilmartin for an undisclosed fee. The 23-year-old Irish shot-stopper made 23 appearances for the Saddlers last season and will provide competition for No.1 Scott Loach. Gilmartin's deal with Walsall expired this summer and the two clubs agreed a compensation package allowing the former Republic of Ireland Under-21 international to pen a two-year deal, with the option of a third year. Watford will be looking for a successful campaign in the Championship next term having finished last season in 16th.
