Nottingham Forest have allowed Sammy Clingan to report for international duty due to his impressive fitness levels.

Forest boss Colin Calderwood had initially denied Clingan the chance to link up with his Northern Ireland team-mates for their friendly against Everton.

However, Calderwood now believes that Clingan's hard work on the training field merits him the chance to be part of Nigel Worthington's new regime.

"Sammy is streets ahead of where we hoped he might be," Calderwood told the club's official website. "He has worked diligently throughout the summer.

"He is looking very, very powerful. So much so that we have changed our minds and allowed him to go over and play for the Irish F.A. team that plays Everton.

"The Irish have a new manager in Nigel Worthington and we want him to go there and feel part of that group.

"If the arrangements can be made, he will take part in a 45-minute session because everything about Sammy is perfect.

"His first game will be with Northern Ireland rather than a training ground game with us in Austria."
