Evans patience proves worthwhile

Rotherham boss Steve Evans is delighted his perseverance has paid off in his pursuit of Newcastle's James Tavernier.

Evans finally landed the 22-year-old on an emergency loan last week after months of trailing him and it proved worthwhile straight away. Tavernier showed his versatility by playing both right-back and left-back in Saturday's 4-1 win over Gillingham, while also marking his debut with an impressive goal. "We have been trying for a while to get James Tavernier here and we got a chink of light from Alan Pardew a few weeks ago that it might happen," Evans said. "So I was patient and persevered and kept asking the question and it came off. James was excellent, he is very good wherever he plays. "When you have got a lad coming in who has played in the Premier League and the Europa League, it means he has a lot of ability. "I have been waiting for a Championship club to sign him but they didn't and thankfully we have got him."
