Carlisle United and Cheltenham were both winners in League One on Wednesday.
Bristol City missed the chance to go second as they lost 1-0 at home to Cheltenham.
Damien Spencer scored the only goal after 44 minutes at Ashton Gate as the visitors moved within two points of safety at the bottom of the table.
Nottingham Forest could also have gone second with a win, but they were defeated 1-0 by Carlisle.
