Bristol City have officially entered the race to land sought-after Gillingham striker Darius Henderson.

The 23-year-old hit-man recently spent a prolific spell on loan at Swindon and had looked to be heading to The County Ground on a permanent basis.

However, City have now attempted to hijack's Swindon bid with a substantial offer of their own.

Swindon have already agreed a fee with Gillingham but City chairman Steve Lansdown is hopeful the player will opt for a move to Ashton Gate.

''We understand Swindon's bid is similar to our offer and if it's not we might be able to adjust it slightly,'' Lansdown told the club's official website.

''But should we have the bid accepted by Gillingham, we hope the player would believe Bristol City to be the best place for him to go.''

Meanwhile, Lansdown also revealed that the club had begun talks with Port Vale over a possible move for Steve Brooker.

''We are also still talking to Port Vale about Steve Brooker, though I'm not so confident on that one,'' he continued.

''If neither comes off we will continue looking.''
