Wilcox has players' support

Scunthorpe came from behind to beat 10-man Coventry 2-1 to ease the pressure on manager Russ Wilcox.

Strikers Paddy Madden and Lyle Taylor got the goals that earned Scunthorpe only their second win of the season. They came after Coventry had been reduced to 10 men in the 24th minute after skipper Reda Johnson was shown a straight red card for appearing to aim a headbutt at Taylor. "I know the sending off was the turning point, but this was a huge win for us for lots of reasons," said Wilcox. "There has been a lot of doom and gloom about the club. "When you look at where we are in the table, it is understandable - but there was a bit too much of it in my eyes. "I want to be successful at this football club and I think the players have shown in their performance that they are behind me and my staff. "There is a great togetherness about them and a commitment to this club. "I asked for a response from them after the disappointment of our 4-1 defeat at Chesterfield on Saturday - and I knew I would get one from this group. "Coventry are an outstanding team with 11 players, one of the best in this division, and they are still a very good one with 10. "It is often difficult to play against teams with 10 men, but I thought we were superb. "We were patient, we passed the ball well and scored two great goals. "It was the first goal for the club for Lyle and hopefully that will give him massive confidence to kick-on from here." Coventry boss Steven Pressley was a disappointed man after seeing his team suffer their first defeat in eight games after Frank Nouble had fired them into a 16th-minute lead. "The sending off was the turning point," Pressley said. "Reda Johnson has held his hands up and apologised for his actions. "But I do not expect my captain to do something like that, and I have told him so. "You just cannot put your head towards an opponent. "We had looked in complete control of the game until then. "We expected a reaction from Scunthorpe after their defeat at Chesterfield on Saturday. "But we came here looking for a win - and it was a game we didn't deserve to lose, even having to play with 10 men for 70 minutes. "We have missed a chance to put pressure on the teams above us in the table and that is very disappointing. "I am disappointed with the result, but not the performance. I thought my players were magnificent. "I was disappointed too not to get a penalty late in the game. "We should have had one for a clear handball - and I have been in and told the referee that."
