Wilcox bullish despite setback

Russ Wilcox was in bullish mood after seeing his Scunthorpe side climb back to the top of League Two after a 2-2 draw with Bury.

It stretched the unbeaten run to 26 games since he first took charge last November - and puts them a point clear of the chasing pack. Scunthorpe looked set for all three points after leading twice in the second half courtesy of goals from Paddy Madden and substitute Paul Hayes. But fast-improving Bury battled back for a point through Tom Soares and a last-gasp effort from substitute Danny Rose in the fourth minute of stoppage time. "Of course it was disappointing to concede so late on, but it was a 'worldy' strike," said Wilcox. "But it's great for this club to be back on top of the table again with now only four games to go. "These are exciting times again and we have got to embrace the moment. "We are in the position that everyone else would like to be. "We are so close to finishing what we set out to do - but we haven't achieved anything yet. "If we continue with performances like this, though, I am sure we will be fine." Wilcox insisted there were no negative thoughts in the minds of him and his players. "I was pleased with our performance and how well the players are playing under pressure," he continued. "We have some young ones like winger Terry Hawkridge and striker Sam Winnall experiencing their first season in the Football League, while young Hakeeb Adelakun has come through from the youth ranks. "It is so important for our experienced players to help them through, but I have a fantastic bunch of players to work with and we have almost achieved what we set out to do. "But we have got to take it one step at a time. Our first aim is to clinch a top-three spot."
