Syers hails Iron defence

David Syers has hailed Scunthorpe's impressive defensive record this season as the club close in on automatic promotion.

The goalless home draw against Wycombe at the weekend extended the Iron's unbeaten run under manager Russ Wilcox to 24 matches - a new Football League record for games undefeated at the start of a managerial reign. Scunthorpe are second in the table, seven points clear of fourth-placed Fleetwood in the race for automatic promotion and Syers was not too frustrated at his side's failure to score against Wycombe. "When that happens, the worst you want to have is a clean sheet and a point. We've done that," he told the club's official website. "We know teams are going to come here and sit behind the ball and aim for a point because we are doing so well. "That's a sign of respect and testament to how well we have done. "From our point of view, that's how we have to go out. We aren't going to get too downhearted if we don't score a goal. "On the flip side, it is another clean sheet. I think that's 19 now for the season, which is a great record for the whole team to be proud of. "It's another point closer and we still have that seven-point gap to the chasing pack with six games to go now."
