Scunthorpe manager Brian Laws refused to blame mis-firing striker Leon Clarke for the 2-1 defeat at home to Bury.
The Iron went down 2-1 at home to Bury and although on-loan forward Clarke scored his 11th goal in 14 appearances, he also missed several other chances.
Laws said: "Leon did not have his shooting boots on. He could have had a hat-trick.
"But he has done really well for this club since joining on loan from Charlton and we cannot lay the blame for this defeat at his door.
"It was not a good performance from us, but we still created enough chances to have won it. That was what I was hoping to be able to say, that we had played badly but still won.
"I think the tone was set in the early stages. Bury came here to battle, as you would expect from a team down there in the table.
"They did to us what we have been doing to other teams. They closed us down quickly and we got sucked into the battle rather than getting the ball down and playing. I also thought we looked a bit fatigued."
