Leeds chairman Ken Bates has told Coventry's Gary McSheffrey to 'let his feet do the talking' after criticising Simon Grayson.
The Leeds manager took McSheffrey on loan from Birmingham last season but refused to take up an option to sign the forward when he was out of contract in the summer after he scored once in 11 games.
McSheffrey rejoined his hometown club Coventry instead, claiming he has not spoken to Grayson since and that he expected "a bit more respect" from the Leeds boss.
The pair are set to meet again as Leeds visit the Ricoh Arena on Saturday and Bates has defended Grayson, saying McSheffrey failed to do enough to earn a permanent move to Elland Road.
The 28-year-old has since helped the Sky Blues go fourth in the Championship, scoring four goals in the last five.
No impact
"When you go on loan to a club you have a magnificent opportunity," said Bates.
"It's a chance to get under the spotlight and the fact of the matter is he was very disappointing.
"He didn't make an impact. It was down to him not Simon Grayson. If you want to be successful you look in the mirror and ask 'what could I have done?'
"No doubt he will be trying to prove us wrong and him right on Saturday.
"He has done well for them and I would say you're better letting your feet do the talking."
