Scunthorpe trial four

Scunthorpe boss Brian Laws played four trialists in the reserves' victory on Tuesday.

Falkirk striker Daniel McBreen (pictured), 29, featured regularly in The Scottish Premier League last season, but was released by the club at the end of last season.

He has already impressed on trial at Brighton & Hove Albion this summer, but could now turn his back on The Seagulls in favour of a move to Glanford Park.

"He is now out of contract and has been highly recommended to us," Laws told the Scunthorpe Telegraph.

"He wants to try his luck in England and has also had offers from a couple of other League One clubs."

Former Aston Villa forward Shane Paul scored twice in the game against The Blades, and ex-Liverpool trainee Robbie Foy also got in on the act with a goal.

Irishman Paul Olima was the other trialist to feature in the first fixture of the new Pontins Holidays League season.

Meanwhile, injury-plagued Iron midfielder James Goodwin has been dealt another blow after suffering a head injury in the 1-0 defeat at Bristol City on August 5.

The 24-year-old Irishman missed the subsequent games with Swansea City and Crewe Alexandra, and looks set to miss several more important games for the club.

"Jim Goodwin had to stay down after the Bristol game following his head injury and has followed this up with a CT scan and assessment with a facial consultant in Bradford," physio Nigel Adkins revealed.

"Jim looks like being out for several weeks."
