Scunthorpe United boss Brian Laws has decided to take up the contract options of defender Kevin Sharp and striker Paul Hayes.

Left back Sharp has been ever-present in the Glanford Park squad since arriving last summer from Huddersfield Town.

The 20-year-old Hayes, meanwhile, has seen little first-team action after falling behind on-loan hit-man Steve MacLean in the striking pecking order.

Despite the striker's current situation, Laws still sees a future for Hayes at the club by taking up the 12-month option on his Iron contract.

"Sharp and Hayes were already on a one-year deal with a 12-month option and all we have done is simply take up that option to keep them here next season," Laws told the Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph.

Laws is also keen to keep veteran Peter Beagrie in his squad, with the Scunthorpe boss full of praise for the former Everton and Bradford City man.

"He may be 38, but he is our best player, it's as simple as that," Laws added.

"Peter, I am sure, wants to carry on playing for as long as he can.

"Forget about his age, he has proved his enthusiasm and commitment to this club over the past three seasons."
