Nigel Adkins will be named Sheffield United's new manager on Tuesday, according to Sky sources.

The 50-year-old, who has been out of a job since being sacked by Reading last December, held talks with the South Yorkshire club on Monday about succeeding Nigel Clough.

Clough, the former Derby boss, was dismissed following their unsuccessful promotion attempt from League One, losing in the play-off semi-finals to Swindon 7-6 on aggregate, with the club citing a "change of direction" being needed.

Adkins left Reading with the club 16th in the Championship and 10 points short of a play-off place. Steve Clarke succeeded him and the club finished 19th, just nine points clear of relegation.

Adkin began his career as the manager of Bangor City in the League of Wales and before taking over at Scunthorpe United and leading them to promotion to the Championship.

He was then headhunted by Southampton in 2010 and led them to successive promotions from League One to the Premier League before being replaced by Mauricio Pochettino, who is now in charge at Tottenham.
