The FA has charged Chesterfield and Preston for failing to control their players during the League One play-off semi-final at the Proact Stadium last Thursday.
The charge relates to an incident in the 28th minute of the match involving Chesterfield winger Gary Roberts and Preston forward Paul Gallagher.
Roberts appeared to grab Gallagher as the pair attempted to get up from the ground and a melee followed which involved a number of players from both sides.
In addition, Preston assistant manager Glynn Snodin has been charged with misconduct.
A statement on the FA's website said: "Both Chesterfield and Preston North End have been charged by the FA in relation to their Football League One play-off match on 7 May 2015.
"It is alleged that in or around the 28th minute of the fixture, the clubs failed to ensure their players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion.
"In relation to the same game, Preston assistant manager Glynn Snodin has been charged for misconduct in that it is alleged his behaviour during the first half of the match amounted to improper conduct.
"Both clubs and Mr Snodin have until 6pm on 15 May 2015 to respond to the charges."
Jermaine Beckford scored the only goal as Preston won 1-0. In the second leg at Deepdale on Sunday, Simon Grayson’s side beat the Spireites 3-0 to secure their spot in the play-off final at Wembley.
