Walsall have extended Michael Cain's loan from Leicester until the end of the season.

The midfielder has been with the Saddlers since October and has scored twice in his last two games. He has helped them to the Johnstone's Paint Trophy Area final against Preston, where they hold a 2-0 first-leg lead and to within three points of the League One top six. "He has developed extremely well during his time with us and fitted in to how we do things here," said boss Dean Smith. "He's a talented lad with a fantastic attitude and hopefully his progress will continue during the months ahead. "It's been a big loss losing Sam Mantom to injury, but Michael has come in and done really well for us." Cain has scored three goals in 19 games for Walsall, including the second in Saturday's 2-0 win at Colchester, which left them 14th in the table. The 20-year-old made his Leicester debut in their Capital One Cup defeat to Shrewsbury in August before joining the Saddlers. Cain added: "I've really enjoyed the first three months here. It's been a great experience and a real learning curve for me. "It's nice to know I will be here for the remainder of the season now, so I can settle down and really kick on. "This is a great club to be involved with and I have developed both as a player and as a person during my time here so far. I am looking for this to continue during the months ahead." Meanwhile, Sam Mantom has had undergone exploratory surgery to discover the cause of his knee problem which has restricted him to just four games this season.
