League One: Chesterfield confident Jimmy Ryan will sign new deal

Chesterfield are confident midfielder Jimmy Ryan will sign a new contract, according to Sky sources.

The 26-year-old, whose current deal expires at the end of the season, recently turned down the the offer of improved terms but Sky Sports understands there is another offer on the table for the player.

Ryan has a strong, close relationship with Spireites manager Paul Cook and the club are hopeful he will agree to stay, as talks continue with player and his representative.

Chesterfield swooped to sign Ryan on a free transfer from Scunthorpe in 2013 when he was on the verge of joining Luton Town – then of the Conference.

The Irishman has been superb during Chesterfield’s excellent start to their League One return, making 25 appearances across all competitions, and scoring against Sheffield United and Gillingham.

Ryan began his career at Shrewsbury before joining Accrington Stanley on a free transfer in 2008, where he spent three years and played over 100 times.

He signed for Scunthorpe in 2011 and played 76 times for the Irons.
