Robins hails important win

Mark Robins was relieved to see Scunthorpe climb out of the bottom four for the first time this season with a 2-1 win over Crewe.

It was the first home win in seven games for the Iron, who have struggled in front of their own fans despite some bright away form. Loanee Luke Williams fired them in front after 10 minutes but they lost their way after Nicky Ajose levelled for Crewe on the half hour. Ajose then saw a second-half free-kick turned against the woodwork by goalkeeper Sam Slocombe, before centre-back Miguel Llera came up with a 77th-minute winner for Scunthorpe. "This was not our best performance - but the result is so important for us," said Robins. "We were under no illusions that this would be a hard game because Crewe have spent some money to bring in some good strikers. "Some of the players seemed a little nervy and we looked a bit laboured. "But what they showed was character in the second half of the second half and we did just enough to deserve to win the game. "It lifts us out of the bottom four for the first time this season, so psychologically this has been such an important result for us. "We have only lost now once in the last 10 games, and that was to a last-minute penalty. So it shows that we are moving in the right direction. "We know we can play better and hopefully we can get ourselves into a position where we can admire our performances as well as the results." Crewe boss Steve Davis is hoping his team's fortunes will soon begin to change after six games now without a win that leaves them anchored to the foot of the table. "Our performances in recent games have been good, we have just not been getting the results," said Davis. "That is what we have got to start doing, turning those performances into wins. "I thought we were the better team again today, particularly in the first half. "I would have been disappointed to have been coming away with just a point from Scunthorpe. "Once we had got back on level terms, if we could have got a second goal I am sure we could have gone on and won it. "We needed that second goal and Nicky Ajose came so close to getting it for us. "But we have got to keep believing in what we are doing - and hopefully our luck will turn."
