League One club Tranmere have suspended manager Ronnie Moore while the Football Association carries out an investigation into "a potential breach of betting rules".
A statement on Rovers' website confirmed that assistant manager John McMahon "has been placed in temporary charge of first team affairs" while adding that the club will make "no further comment until the outcome of the investigation."
It emerged last week that the FA are planning to question the 61-year-old over allegations that, in contravention of the rules, he placed a bet on a competition which the League One club are involved in.
However, it is understood that no FA charges have been brought against Moore and the FA would neither confirm or deny that their integrity unit, which handles betting matters, was investigating Moore.
Moore took charge at the Merseyside club for the second time in 2012, having also had spells in charge at Oldham, Southport and Rotherham.
