Middlesbrough have confirmed that Richie Smallwood has joined Rotherham United on loan for the rest of the season.
The 23-year-old, a product of Boro's highly acclaimed academy, is the third player to depart on loan in the last 24-hours following on from Adam Reach's move to Bradford and Luke Williams signing for Hartlepool.
Now Boro boss Aitor Karanka has sanctioned the departure of Smallwood, along with Williams and Reach.
"It's difficult to know the players in training if you can't see them play and for this reason Luke, Adam and Richie are going on loan," explained Karanka.
"They are young players and potential players for our team and I want them to be playing. When you're young you need to play."
Karanka is yet to make a decision on midfielder Matty Dolan - who has returned from a loan spell at Hartlepool.
A number of clubs are keen to take him, but Karanka seemingly wants a close look.
"Matty is a different player for me because I don't know him and I need to," said Karanka.
"I need to be very, very sure to let him go on loan or keep him here and I need to think."
