Graham Westley insists Stevenage are well on the way to recovery after watching his side edge out Brentford 2-1 at home.
Francois Zoko scored twice after Clayton Donaldson had opened the scoring for the visiting Bees.
"It was a hard-earned victory and it was never going to be an easy game," said Westley, whose side moved up to 19th in the table.
"In the early stages they caused problems as we were hesitant and they got ahead but what a tremendous response from my players.
"Their character is starting to shine through now and it's nice to see a positive response and get three points.
"You can see how much more focused the players are on winning. The work rate and belief has gone up a notch.
"I think if there is an outstanding performer it's Francois Zoko and not just for the goals.
"There was one moment near the end when we gave the ball away and he is making a 70-yard run from attack to help out in defence which epitomises the way we are starting to play.
"Step by step we are changing things round and some of that is about getting into good habits and some of it is about personnel."
