Preston manager Simon Grayson is confident of tying up his first signings of the summer in the coming days.
Youngsters Ben Davies, Ryan Croasdale and Steven James committed their futures to North End on Monday and Grayson is hopeful they will soon be joined by some more seasoned professionals.
He told the Lancashire Evening Post: "We've had negotiations and meetings with players and agents over the last 10 days to two weeks.
"This is the stage of the close season when it's a bit of a game of cat and mouse, players wanting to keep their options open for as long as possible. We are quite a bit down the line with one or two players and it would be nice to get them in to make the squad better.
"In terms of what we want, I'm not specifically going to say how many will be coming in. Someone might become available who you didn't think would be or your budget might increase.
"But whatever it takes to make us competitive at the top end of the table, we will try and do that.
