Sky Sports understands Scunthorpe United have agreed a deal with Tranmere Rovers for Mark McChrystal.
The 28-year-old defender has fallen out of favour at Prenton Park this season, severely restricting his game time.
The Northern Irishman has spent the best part of two years with Tranmere, making close to 50 league appearances.
He is, however, being forced to weigh up his options after struggling for minutes.
Scunthorpe are prepared to draft him into their ranks, with Brian Laws in the process of trying to oversee a reversal in fortune at Glanford Park.
The Iron remain inside the League One drop zone at present, but have shown encouraging signs of late and a few fresh faces could help them to start pulling clear of trouble.
