Sky Sports understands Eugen Bopp is currently on trial at Scunthorpe United.
The 28-year-old midfielder is keen to earn a deal at Glanford Park having left York City following a short stint at the League Two new boys at the back end of last season.
Bopp had previously taken in a spell at German outfit FC Carl Zeiss Jena before returning to England earlier this year.
Iron boss Alan Knill will look at the player during the close-season before deciding whether to offer him an extended stay.
Bopp, who has two Germany U19 caps to his name, started his career at Nottingham Forest and later played for Rotherham and Crewe.
