Davis pondering starting Martin

Crewe manager Steve Davis has revealed Alan Martin could start as first-choice keeper in place of injured Steve Phillips.

Martin, who signed for the Alex from Ayr United in 2011, has been unable to oust Phillips from the first XI and made his first home appearance for the club in Saturday's 1-1 friendly draw with Bolton. "I thought Alan did well in what was his first real game if you like at home and in front of a decent crowd," said Davis. "He deserves a special mention because I thought he handled it well and make some good saves. "He may start the season in the team because we are unsure how long Steve will be out for. He is set to go in again this week to have a look at his knee, so there is some concern there, but we are hoping it is not as serious as it could be. "I am not sure if he will be fit for the start of the season, so this is Alan's chance to impress and he has done well so far."
