Jamie Lowry's proposed move to Crewe Alexandra has been placed on hold due to concerns over the midfielder's troublesome knee.
The 25-year-old spent two months on loan with the Alex last season after being sidelined for two years following cruciate ligament surgery.
And the former Chesterfield man, now a free agent, impressed manager Steve Davis, who is keen to bring him back to Gresty Road.
"Jamie had the medical, which all players who sign are subject to, and we also had a scan on his knee to check it out," Davis told The Sentinel.
"Our physio said there were one or two things in there which were a little bit concerning, so I'm having another conversation with him to see where we go from here.
"I like Jamie and he can bring something to the football club, but we have to judge that against the decisions of the consultant."
