Welsh ready to boost Cumbrians

Carlisle midfielder Andy Welsh is looking forward to playing a bigger role next season after putting an injury nightmare behind him.

The 28-year-old joined the Cumbrians on a free transfer from Yeovil and signed a two-year deal last summer, but was restricted to 24 appearances due to a long-term calf injury sustained during training in late September. Welsh, whose baby daughter Lily recently turned one, told the club's official website: "There was one point when I thought I was back to fitness, but as soon as I trained I knew it didn't feel right. "That prolonged the amount of time I had to spend undergoing treatment and it was a really frustrating period. I think that was when Lily and my wife really played an important part in making sure I didn't allow myself to get too low. "You do try to be as matter-of-fact about these things as you can be. I've said in the past that picking up an injury is part and parcel of football, but if I'm being honest it isn't nice to have to miss out. "But the season was what it was and that's where I can be positive. I'm all about drawing a line under things and making sure I'm in the right frame of mind to push on when the new campaign starts. That's exactly what I'll be doing in July."
