County's substance pleases boss

Notts County manager Martin Allen was happy to put substance over style to guide his side to a 2-1 victory over Exeter.

A goal from Lee Hughes and a penalty by Jeff Hughes, either side of an equaliser by Exeter's Scot Bennett, gave the Magpies a valuable three points which lifted them up to ninth in League One. Allen said: "We could have been 4-0 up with a couple of great chances but it wasn't to be. Then in the second half it was very gritty and determined - not a pretty to look at performance but three points in that style is pretty good. "In the last two weeks we've trained for half an hour on grass - it was always going to be a tricky fixture after that sort of preparation and I'm really proud and pleased for the players. "The support was outstanding in the second half - they stayed with the players. They could see it wasn't quite flowing freely and how we really do like to play. "But we've been talking about those sorts of performances for the last couple of months and not getting the results."
