Tully: Makes case for supporters

Football is feeling the pinch of recession, according to Exeter defender Steve Tully.

Tully's Grecians have seen average gates at St James' Park fall drastically this season, partly down to the club's struggles on the pitch but also, the defender insists, because of the current economic climate.

Only a string of positive results and encouraging performances are likely to entice the paying public back through the turnstiles, and the 31-year-old has resolved on helping Exeter do just that for the remainder of the season.

"It (lower crowds) is not just in League One, it's at all football clubs in the country," he said. "With the financial climate, everything has dropped and we can feel the full front of it.

"The crowds now can be down maybe 1,000 from last year, maybe more. We know what the football club is under, it's just figuring out what we as players can do.

"The fans want to see signings coming in and doing well on the pitch. If the money isn't there for that then we need to do what we can to get those fans to come back."
