Midfielder John Welsh believes Tranmere's success in League One this season is down to their work-rate and defensive record.

Rovers are currently seventh in the table, just one place off the play-off spots after toiling near the relegation zone for much of last season.

"You have to look at the work rate of the side," Welsh told the Liverpool Daily Post.

"It is unbelievable how much the likes of Enoch Showunmi, Lucas Akins, Adam McGurk and Mustafa Tiryaki are doing for the team."

Welsh also praised Tranmere's defence which has conceded just four goals in eight league games at Prenton Park.

He added: "We are giving ourselves a chance by keeping a lot of clean sheets and you've got to give credit to the goalkeeper and the back four for that."
