Paul Reid has apologised to Scunthorpe fans after they were mauled 5-0 against Barnsley in their final pre-season fixture.
The Iron conceded five first-half goals to the Tykes and defender Reid offered some sobering advice to those who believe Scunthorpe will return to the Championship with ease.
"Being at home we all wanted to give the fans some optimism ahead of the new season so they have something to look forward to and they deserved better," he told the club's official website.
"It's a bit of a wake-up call because we can't play like that regardless of who the opposition is.
"I think we've got to realise that we're possibly not as good as what we think we are.
"There's a lot of talk about us bouncing back and getting back in the Championship but on these performances it's not looking that clear cut."
