Scunthorpe skipper Cliff Byrne will miss the start of the season as he is still recovering from back surgery.

The Irishman underwent summer surgery to repair a trapped nerve in his back.

Byrne has not played since the start of January due to the problem and is not expected to return to contention until September.

"Unfortunately Cliff will miss the pre-season," Iron boss Alan Knill told the club's official website. "The doctors say it will be September when he's ready to play again.

"Obviously we're disappointed with that because he's been a big player for this club and still is. But we need to make sure he's fully fit when he returns."
