Oxford United have snapped up striker Deane Smalley after he rejected a new contract at Oldham Athletic.
Smalley, whose Latics deal was set to expire this summer, has signed a two-year agreement at the Kassam Stadium, with the option of a third, for an undisclosed compensation fee.
The 22-year-old enjoyed a fruitful loan spell with League Two champions Chesterfield last season in which he scored 12 goals in 29 appearances.
U's manager Chris Wilder told the club's official website: "We have beaten off stiff competition for Deane's signature and there will be a lot of disappointed clubs knowing we have signed him.
"Deane is a player we have tracked thoroughly for the past five months. We have monitored his progression since coming through the youth ranks at Oldham."
Smalley added: "There were some other clubs interested in me but as soon as I came here Oxford United stood out for me with their ambition and fantastic fanbase. I spoke to the manager and chairman and they showed me the set-up and I was very impressed."
