Carlisle United defender Sean McDaid has been forced into retirement at the age of 25 due to a knee injury.
McDaid picked up the problem against Exeter City back in October and has been advised to call it a day with immediate effect.
The full-back only joined Carlisle last summer from Doncaster Rovers and had been an ever-present in the team prior to his injury.
He had previously dislocated his knee in May 2008 and subsequently made just one further first-team appearance before leaving Doncaster for Carlisle.
However, the latest injury is unrelated to his past problems and McDaid revealed his devastation at being forced to quit.
"Obviously I am absolutely devastated because I was really starting to enjoy my football here," McDaid told the club's official website.
"It's a new and complicated injury to the knee and that's why the medical staff have advised that I should retire from the professional game immediately.
"There are so many people that I would like to thank for the way they have helped me and supported me since I came to the club, and I would like to do that after I have had a bit of time to come to terms with the news."
