Midfielder links up with Dickov's side before window shuts

Oldham Athletic have snapped up teenage midfielder Medi Abalimba on a free transfer from Derby County. Abalimba linked up with the Latics before the close of the January transfer window after failing to make an impact at Derby. He had previously been signed by Derby from Southend United and had trials at Premier League clubs earlier in this career. However, the 19-year-old has yet to make a senior appearance and will hope to be given an opportunity to shine by Oldham boss Paul Dickov. Born in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Abalimba is primarily a midfielder, but can also operate as a full-back. Meanwhile, Oldham cancelled the contracts of Kelvin Lomax, Rob Purdie, Greg Fleming and Joe Jacobson on deadline day.
