Walsall winger makes loan move to Motherwell

Motherwell manager Stuart McCall has continued to rebuild his squad with the loan signing of Steve Jones from Walsall. McCall brought in Leeds striker Mike Grella from Leeds on a loan deal until the end of the season earlier on Thursday and winger Jones has now arrived on similar terms. Jones, 34, has won 29 caps for Northern Ireland and played under McCall at Bradford two seasons ago. McCall said: "I know Steve well as a player and what he can bring to the team. "He's got a trick or two and I think the fans will take to him. He is a naturally left-sided player, something we've been crying out for, and I am hopeful he will fill that gap. "I don't think this is the end of the new faces either. I've got more lined up to come in so we'll see what happens in the coming days."

Defender search

Both Jones and Grella could be involved in Saturday's SPL clash against Hibernian and McCall hopes to sign at least one more player after losing Nick Blackman, Alan Gow, Marc Fitzpatrick and Mark Reynolds since taking over. McCall attended reserve games in England this week looking for a left-sided defender to replace Reynolds, who joined Sheffield Wednesday at the weekend. McCall added: "There are a lot of right centre-halfs who can play there but we've not got any cover for Stevie Hammell at left-back. Mark could also play left-back. "If I bring another defender in that will be my budget. I really need for balance a left-sided centre-back but they are proving hard to acquire." McCall has had several foreign trialists at Fir Park this week, including former Falkirk striker Pedro Moutinho, but none of them are likely to sign this month. "They played a bounce game on Tuesday and we've only been able to train on astro," McCall said. "So we've not been able to see enough of them."
