Midfielder signs until end of season, subject to clearance

Rangers have completed the signing of French-Algerian midfielder Salim Kerkar. The Scottish champions have made protracted attempts to sign the 23-year-old and have confirmed they have finally secured his services on a short-term deal until the end of the season, subject to international clearance. "He is a lad who is shaping up well," assistant manager Ally McCoist told the club's official website. "He is a nice lad but more importantly he has a good left foot." Gers boss Walter Smith had been impressed by Kerkar while training with the first-team squad at their Murray Park base.

Compensation claim

He appeared to end his interest in the player after it emerged former club Gueugnon were seeking compensation after releasing him in the summer. However, a deal has finally been thrashed out, believed to instead feature a sell-on clause, and Kerkar will be eligible for first-team fixtures for the remainder of the season once international clearance has been received. Kerkar began his career with Gueugnon in 2006 and made 49 appearances for the French third-division club while spending the 2007/08 season on loan at Calais.
