Eddie Mitchell believes Bournemouth owe it to Brett Pitman to allow the striker to join Championship club Bristol City.
Pitman has agreed personal terms to join the Robins and is expected to finalise a reported £800,000 move to Ashton Gate on Monday.
The 22-year-old had turned down a transfer to Premier League newcomers Blackpool earlier in the week after impressing for Bournemouth in recent seasons.
Cherries chairman Mitchell understands why Pitman wants to test himself at a higher level and was prepared to grant the forward his wish.
Mitchell told the Daily Echo: "He's been sold because he's wanting to go and play for a club in a higher division that can offer him a better prospect, and that's what we've let him do.
"He was very keen to see the enquiries coming in and very anxious to move forward.
"I know he was still under contract, but I think we owed it to him to let him go on and try his hand a bit further up the scale."
