Tranmere boss Les Parry has confirmed the club have cancelled the contract of Michael Ricketts.

One-time England international released from Rovers contract

Tranmere Rovers boss Les Parry has confirmed the club have cancelled the contract of Michael Ricketts. The striker only signed a one-year deal with the Prenton Park outfit in August but has had his first-team chances limited in a difficult season. The 31-year-old former England international made eight starts and nine substitute appearances, with just two goals to his name. Parry revealed the decision was made for the benefit of the player, who was concerned by his lack of pitch time in the twilight of his career. "Michael's chances of starting matches here have been restricted by the form of Ian Thomas-Moore, Craig Curran, Terry Gornell and Chris Shuker," said Parry.

Opportunity

"At this stage of his career Michael felt that he needed to play regular first-team football so we've decided to give him the chance to join another club where he will get an opportunity to play. "During his time at the club Michael has been a valuable member of the squad and has conducted himself professionally at all times. "I wish him all the best for the rest of his career." Ricketts shot to prominence with Bolton in the 2000/01 season, scoring 24 goals for the Trotters as they secured promotion to the Premier League. He continued his goalscoring exploits in the top flight, earning him an international call up and he made his sole England appearance against Holland in 2002. The former Middlesbrough and Leeds man lost his way thereafter and is once again a free agent after leaving Rovers, his eleventh club since his heydays with Bolton.
