Matty McNeil has left crisis-torn club Stockport County just a month after rejoining the club on a free transfer.
The striker, who has been playing at centre-half for the Hatters in recent weeks, first signed for Stockport in summer 2007 from near neighbours Macclesfield.
The 33-year-old decided to leave Edgeley Park last summer but having struggled to find a new club he gratefully took up Stockport's offer when they offered him a month's contract in December.
McNeil was reportedly promised a deal until the end of the season if the club moved out of administration but, following the failed takeover attempt last week, the only offer on the table was another one-month contract.
The frontman rejected the terms and has immediately left the club with County rock bottom of League One having lost their last 12 league games meaning they find themselves 12 points from safety.
"I'm upset and disappointed because I would have liked to have stayed," he told the
Stockport Express.
"I left in the summer because I knew the way things were going at the club.
"I tried very hard to find a new club but finances are tight everywhere at the moment, and when I got a call from County out of the blue I thought it would be stupid to turn down the chance to play League One football."
