Les Parry wants to keep Zoumana Bakayogo at Tranmere but admits the club's financial situation may dash his hopes.
The 23-year-old defender was brought to Prenton Park in September by former boss John Barnes but was unable to play until October due to a delay over his international clearance.
He finally made his debut against Stockport in October and has since caught the eye, including a man-of-the-match display in the 2-0 win against Bristol Rovers at the weekend.
But the Frenchman's short-term contract runs out in January and Parry admits Rovers may struggle to hold on to him.
"As we all know we have financial (issues) and we're obviously trying to keep him," he told BBC Radio Merseyside.
"But we're just going to have to watch that space."
He added: "I don't know if there is anybody in for him but it has gone a little bit quiet.
"We're getting to the deadline so we need to get it sorted."
