Carlisle defender heads to Priestfield for five weeks

Carlisle defender Josh Gowling has agreed a five-week loan spell with Gillingham, with a view to earning an extended stay. The 24-year-old joined the Cumbrians last summer from Bournemouth but could now be set for a swift return South. Gillingham are on the lookout for defensive reinforcements with manager Mark Stimson admitting that he would consider loan moves. Carlisle boss Greg Abbott has agreed for Gowling to spend an initial short-term stint at Priestfield before Stimson decides whether to pursue his interest further. Abbott told Carlisle's official website: "I was happy that he had returned for pre-season to fight for his place, but an opportunity has come up for him to get some regular football and to put himself in the shop window. "We are well covered in that area, so this will give him a chance to see what he can do with Gillingham." Gowling has been given permission to feature in the Carling Cup with the Gills.
